As the 2006 archery season was coming to a close, Matt Thede encouraged team member Matt Strayer to take to the tree one last time. The duo headed for a favorite spot of Thede's, a spot that he new very well. It was a cool morning with a breeze out of the north. At first light things started slow, but by 8:00 a.m. a few does emerged and crossed the ridge behind their location. The does were followed by a nice 9-pointer that Strayer elected to harvest. Strayer bleated the buck to stop him and placed the arrow behind the buck's front left shoulder. It was the team effort that made this harvest possible. This segment will be on the video that is to be released the summer of 2008.
Saturday and Sunday, October 28th and 29th Thede and Strayer spent on the farm in Kalona trying to figure it out even more. After getting in the stand late on Saturday night, they ended up seeing 3 big deer and had one really close but no shot opportunity presented itself. They were really excited that deer were on their feet. Sunday morning was much more of the same. They had another nice 8 pointer come in but decided that it wasn't quite what they were looking for. After a long debate we decided to sit in a stand that Thede and his wife had seen some nice bucks in; they stuck to their plan and it paid off! They had seen about 4 small bucks come in and then start to chase does. Thede looked over and seen a nice 8-pt buck with tall tines. After a while of mingling around Strayer made a huge decision to change tapes as the buck was about 60 yds away. That proved to be a huge decision as the buck took awile to come in. After a doe bleat and a grunt call, he came at them and made a scrape about 25 yds away and then walked right under their stand downwind! He didn't smell them and continued to walk away. Thede waited for him to turn a little, but he didn't so he grunted and he gave Thede the shot he was looking for. Thede ended up hitting him a little high, but caught the lung and he only ran about 70 yds and expired! Thede's first buck with a bow!! Strayer did a fantastic job with the footage.
